Places to Look for Work

There are plenty of places to find typing work online and plenty of services and websites to direct you in the right direction. It just takes a little extra effort and time to build a reputation that you are a reliable provider of services. You need to consider first, however, if you have the right skills, the right equipment, and the software to get the job done.

Freelance Work

The most common way to find work, is to register with websites that deal in freelance work. This is how it works. An individual, a business, or a particular employer will post work for hire ads under different categories. They will outline the job they need completed. Freelances can then bid on the work, and if the requestor likes their bid or their services, you get the job.

Some of the more popular sites are linked in this article.

Large Word Processing Companies Have Work

If you have the skills and can transcribe, there are many large transcription services nationwide that hire employees nationwide to transcribe recorded statements and other audio files. Technology makes it easy now for these companies to attach audio files to emails that you can transcribe and then email back to them the completed text. Some companies have sophisticated equipment and software they use to accomplish the transference of audio and completed files.

Do an online search under "transcription" or "recorded insurance statements" and then visit their websites to see if they are hiring. If not, at least send them a resume.

Get your Yellow Pages out as well and look for local transcription or word processing companies in your immediate area. Contact them and see if they are willing to outsource work for overflow or if they hire employees to work from their homes.

Government Agencies

Here's another source. Pretty much every state has a Procurement Department that has a list of potential vendors to use. A lot of government agencies will outsource work, including transcription and typing. They do so by posting it on their state website and putting it out to bid. You can go to your State's site and register as a vendor, then routinely check the site for work out to bid. Even if you're not a resident of a particular state, you can register at other states. However, preference will usually be given to residents.

Other Ways to Find Work

If you don't mind hitting the pavement, you can find work around your town too by marketing yourself in a variety of ways. If you like to type and want to help, post your name and telephone number on university bulletin boards for people who need help typing papers.

Also, check your local newspapers or Craigslist for postings looking for help. If you have ingenuity, you can find work. But sometimes it takes work to find it!

Good luck.
